Description
Description
Healios® is an oral supplement powder specifically developed to support the health of the mouth, throat, and esophageal lining in adults undergoing chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy who are at risk of, or currently experiencing, oral mucositis (“cancer mouth sores”) and treatment‑related swallowing discomfort. It is supplied as an unflavored 10.93 oz (310 g) jar that is mixed with water and used as a “swish and swallow” solution, typically taken twice daily under the guidance of a healthcare professional.
Key Features & Benefits
-
Developed for oncology patients
- Intended for adults receiving chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy who are at increased risk for oral mucositis, esophagitis, mouth pain, and difficulty swallowing.
- Can be used proactively (at the start of therapy) or reactively (after mouth sores appear), according to the clinician’s protocol.
-
Supports oral and upper GI mucosa
- Formulated to support epithelial and mucosal tissues lining the mouth, oropharynx, and esophagus.
- Helps maintain a moist, protected environment on the mucosal surface while providing key amino acids involved in tissue repair.
-
Unflavored, low‑calorie powder
- Unflavored profile is helpful for patients who experience altered taste (dysgeusia) during cancer treatment.
- Low‑calorie (about 25 calories per 11 g serving) so it can be added to existing nutrition regimens without significantly increasing overall caloric intake.
-
Simple “swish and swallow” administration
- Mixed with a small volume of water, swished around the mouth to allow contact with oral tissues, then swallowed slowly to coat the throat and upper esophagus.
- Oral route is often preferred for patients who are able to swallow, as it does not require additional equipment.
-
Evidence‑informed formulation
- Contains L‑Glutamine as the primary amino acid, which plays a role in rapidly dividing cells and intestinal/mucosal health.
- Includes Trehalose and L‑Arginine in a glutamine‑disaccharide complex designed to enhance local delivery along mucosal surfaces.
-
Designed by oncology expertise
- Created by hematologist‑oncologist Dr. Peter Anderson with a focus on supportive care in patients receiving intensive cancer therapies.
- Intended to be used alongside standard oral care protocols and good oral hygiene practices.
Indications / Intended Use
-
Adults undergoing chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or combined chemoradiation who are:
- At risk of developing oral mucositis (e.g., regimens known to cause mouth sores).
- Experiencing existing mouth sores, oral pain, throat irritation, or dysphagia associated with treatment‑induced mucosal damage.
-
Use as a dietary oral supplement to:
- Support the mucosal lining of the mouth, throat, and upper esophagus.
- Complement, not replace, complete nutritional support (oral or enteral).
Use should be based on recommendations from a physician, nurse, dietitian, or other qualified healthcare provider as part of a comprehensive supportive care plan.
Directions for Use
-
Frequency and duration
- Commonly used twice daily (for example, morning and evening), starting at the beginning of therapy or at the first signs of oral discomfort, and continued throughout treatment and recovery as advised by the clinician.
-
Preparation
- Measure one serving (approximately 11 g; typically one level scoop if a scoop is included) of Healios powder.
- Add to about 50–100 mL (up to 4 oz) of room‑temperature water in a cup or shaker.
- Stir or shake until the powder is fully dissolved and the solution appears uniform.
-
Administration
- Take a sip, swish the solution gently around the mouth for about 10 seconds to allow contact with the cheeks, tongue, gums, and oral mucosa.
- Swallow slowly to allow the solution to coat the back of the throat and upper esophagus.
- Repeat until the prepared solution is finished.
-
Timing relative to food and oral care
- Many clinicians recommend using Healios after a meal or after oral hygiene (brushing and rinsing) to maximize contact time with the mucosa.
- Patients may be advised to avoid eating, drinking, or rinsing the mouth for approximately 30–40 minutes after using Healios to allow prolonged contact.
Patients should not change the dose, frequency, or duration without consulting their healthcare team.
Composition / Ingredients

The formulation centers around a glutamine‑disaccharide complex designed for local mucosal support rather than systemic high‑calorie supplementation.
